Abstract

The concept of mindset transformation has gained considerable popularity in psychological research and applied practice as a proposed mechanism for improving performance outcomes. However, accumulating empirical evidence suggests that the effects of mindset and mindset-based interventions are more limited and context-dependent than early studies implied. The present article provides a critical review of contemporary empirical research examining the relationship between mindset transformation and performance outcomes. Drawing on meta-analytic findings and large-scale field studies, the review analyzes the magnitude of observed effects, the role of contextual moderators, and key methodological limitations. The evidence indicates that growth mindset is associated with performance outcomes in a statistically reliable but generally weak manner, while intervention effects are most pronounced under specific conditions, particularly among individuals at risk of underperformance. Furthermore, systematic reviews demonstrate that when publication bias and research quality are taken into account, the practical impact of mindset interventions is substantially reduced. The article concludes that mindset should be understood as an indirect and context-sensitive factor operating within broader systems of self-regulation and environmental support, rather than as a universal determinant of performance.
