Abstract

The article is devoted to the consideration of the distinctive features of the Nigerian variant of English in Nigerian English media texts. The transformation processes of English at the grammatical and lexical levels were analyzed on the example of the Nigerian English online publication Pulse Nigeria. The characteristic features of the Nigerian variant of English were discovered, which include the excessive repetition of homogeneous lexical units, violations of the agreement between nouns and verbs, and the active use of abbreviations. It is concluded that deviations from the British English norm are caused by the interference of local languages and globalization processes. It is noted that studying the specifics of Nigerian English media texts opens up opportunities for understanding how the Nigerian variant of English is evolving, gaining its own identity while maintaining its connection to the British norm.
