For over 50 years, breast implants have been used for cosmetic breast augmentation and post-mastectomy breast reconstruction. In 2020, approximately 1.6 million breast augmentation surgeries were performed worldwide. Risks associated with breast augmentation and reconstruction with implants arise both immediately after surgery and years later.
In this article, we provide an overview of common complications, including hematoma, graft rupture, infection, seroma, capsular contracture, malposition, breast implant-associated aplastic large cell lymphoma, and peri-implant squamous cell carcinoma.
Chronic infection (with a predominance of gram-negative bacteria), biofilm formation, implant texture, chronic inflammation, and genetic factors play a role in the development of breast implant-associated aplastic large cell lymphoma. All of these factors contribute to the development of T-cell malignancy.
