Abstract

Congenital hypothyroidism is a common endocrine disorder in newborns and has a major impact on the child's neurocognitive development. From an etiological point of view, it can be divided into thyroid dysgenesis, i.e. abnormal development of the thyroid gland, and dyshormonogenesis, in which a defective pathway of thyroid hormone biosynthesis leads to insufficient hormone production despite the structural integrity of the gland.

Early diagnosis by newborn screening is crucial for timely treatment and is now recognized worldwide.
