Abstract

The article reviews data on the prevalence of obesity and the role of oxidative stress in the pathophysiology of obesity.

Obesity is a chronic disease with multisystemic consequences, its prevalence is increasing worldwide and has a serious impact on public health.

Reactive oxygen species are a by-product of metabolism and play an important role in the development of obesity and its metabolic complications. They also change the concentration of molecules involved in inflammation associated with a large number and size of adipocytes, promote adipogenesis and lipogenesis, and stimulate the differentiation of preadipocytes into mature adipocytes.

Oxidative stress plays an important role in the pathophysiology of obesity by altering regulatory factors of mitochondrial activity, influencing the concentration of inflammatory mediators associated with the large number and size of adipocytes, promoting lipogenesis, stimulating the differentiation of preadipocytes into mature adipocytes, and regulating energy balance in hypothalamic neurons that control appetite.
