THE NOUNS OF GENERAL SEMANTICS AND COGNITIVE BASIS OF FORMATION OF THEIR MEANINGS

Abstract

The article deals with the cognitive basis for the formation of meanings nouns of general semantics in the process of functioning of the language. It describes one of the areas of conceptualization, but also indicates a number of meanings, formed on the conceptual background in this field based on language material taken from the British National Corpus language database website. The purpose of the conducted corpus research is to reveal the specifics of the representation of linguistic units of general semantics in the English-language picture of the world. To achieve this goal, the task was set to consider the cognitive basis for the study of these lexical units. The article outlines the conceptual areas of their use and the meanings that these lexical units convey in these contexts. The scientific novelty of the study is manifested in the cognitive analysis of dictionary interpretations of these nouns that were identified in the process of studying linguistic material used in conveying their meanings in written and oral speech. As a result of the study, the conceptual areas in which these linguistic units are most often used were identified. There also some techniques of cognitive-matrix analysis in relation to the shell nouns are analyzed. The practical significance is in the possibility of using the results of this work in lectures on lexicology of the English language and in special courses on linguoconceptology.
